What is dignity? I am asking you this because it is the foundation on which sustainable service-to-others is built and yet so many of us, including myself, have difficulty being able to define it. Until I had to sit down and try to explain why I felt so passionately about committing myself to the service of others I would have said dignity is the same as respect. I would have been wrong.
Dignity is our inborn sense of value and worth as human beings. It is our sense of the value of ourselves. Respect, on the other hand, is what is reflected back to us from others. All of us have a deep and profound desire to be treated as something of value deserving of:
I am inviting you to honor the dignity of others. Get involved. Your involvement does not have to be some grand gesture. It could be as simple as supporting your local foodbank or participating in a clothing drive. When we honor another’s dignity, we strengthen our own. I have shared links to some of my favorite charitable organizations and galleries of some from the events in which I have participated. I hope that this inspires you to get involved.
